BUR Roofing FAQs

Common questions about built-up roofing systems.

Why is it called "built-up" roofing?

BUR systems are literally "built up" from multiple layers of felt and asphalt. Each layer adds redundancy—if one layer is compromised, the layers beneath continue protecting the building.

Does BUR still use hot asphalt?

Traditional hot-applied BUR uses heated asphalt between plies. Cold-applied alternatives using adhesives are also available for buildings where hot work isn't practical.

Can BUR handle foot traffic?

Yes—gravel-surfaced BUR is one of the most traffic-resistant roofing systems available. The aggregate provides excellent protection against foot traffic, tools, and equipment.

How do you find leaks in a gravel roof?

We use electronic leak detection, infrared scanning, and core sampling to pinpoint moisture intrusion. Once located, we can repair specific areas without replacing the entire roof.
