How It Works

Three steps, about a minute, no email required.

1. Enter your address

We centre high-resolution satellite imagery over your property and find your building automatically.

2. Check the outline

Your roof outline appears with draggable points. Nudge any point to the visible roof edge, add corners, or trace extra sections like a garage.

3. Get your numbers

Pick your roof pitch and instantly see square footage, roofing squares, and a suggested material order with waste.

How Satellite Roof Measurement Works

Satellite roof measurement starts with your building's footprint — the outline of your home as seen from directly above. When you enter your address, the tool locates your property on current satellite imagery and places measurement points around your roof automatically, using open building-outline data that covers nearly every home in Calgary. Each point can be dragged, so you can align the outline precisely with the drip edge you see in the photo, add corners for bay windows or additions, and outline detached structures separately.

The tool then calculates the area geodesically — the same math professional measurement software uses — rather than treating the image as a flat picture, so the square footage holds up at any roof size.

Footprint vs. actual roof surface

A satellite looks straight down, so it sees your roof's footprint, not its sloped surface. The steeper the pitch, the more real roofing material sits above that footprint. The tool converts footprint to roof surface using the standard pitch multiplier:

PitchTypical roofMultiplier2,000 sq ft footprint becomes
Flat (0–2:12)Commercial, some additions1.002,000 sq ft
Low (4:12)Bungalows, ranches1.052,110 sq ft
Medium (6:12)Most Calgary two-storeys1.122,240 sq ft
Steep (9:12)Character homes, chalets1.252,500 sq ft
Very steep (12:12)A-frames, Tudor styles1.412,830 sq ft

How accurate is it?

For most homes, an aligned outline lands within a few percent of a professional measurement — accurate enough to compare quotes, sanity-check a contractor's numbers, or budget with our roof cost calculator. Two things satellite measurement can't fully see: eave overhangs (the roof usually extends 1–2 ft past the walls, so drag the points out to the visible roof edge, not the walls) and pitch transitions on complex roofs. That's why every quote we give is confirmed with a free on-site assessment — drone and hands-on measurement included, no obligation.

Why measure your roof before calling a roofer?

Knowing your roofing squares before you talk to contractors puts you in control. You can spot inflated measurements, compare roof replacement quotes on equal footing, estimate materials for a repair, and understand exactly what you're paying per square. It takes a minute, and the number is yours to keep — no forms, no follow-up calls unless you ask for them.

Roof Measurement FAQ

Quick answers about measuring your roof from satellite imagery.

For most Calgary homes the automatic outline lands within a few percent of the true roof footprint, and dragging the points to the visible roof edge tightens it further. Satellite measurement can't see pitch changes, overhangs hidden by trees, or structural details, which is why we confirm exact numbers with a free on-site assessment before quoting.

Yes. There's no cost, no account, and no email required. Measure as many roofs as you like.

Calgary has excellent open building-footprint data. When you pick your address, the tool finds your building's outline and places measurement points on the satellite image for you. If no outline exists for your address, you can trace the roof yourself in a few taps.

One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. Roofers price materials and labour in squares, so a 2,400 sq ft roof is 24 squares. Contractors typically order about 10% extra to cover cuts and waste.

Satellites look straight down, so they see your roof's footprint, not its sloped surface. The tool multiplies the footprint by a pitch factor — for example a 6:12 pitch adds about 12% area, and a steep 12:12 pitch adds about 41%. Pick the pitch that looks closest to your roof and the tool does the math.

Yes — use "Add a section" to outline a detached garage, shop, or addition. The tool adds every section together for a combined total.
