Built-Up Roofing on Calgary Buildings
Many older Calgary warehouses, schools and plazas still have tar-and-gravel built-up roofs. When they are maintained, their multiple plies and gravel surface make them tough, but most are now decades old, and the question we are asked most is whether to repair, restore or replace them.
- Repair: localized blisters, split flashings and leaks at penetrations can usually be fixed without disturbing the whole roof.
- Assess before deciding: core cuts and moisture scans show whether water has spread into the insulation, which is usually what decides repair versus replacement.
- Weight: gravel-surfaced BUR is heavy, so any recover or conversion is checked against the structure and Calgary snow loads.
- Modern alternatives: when replacement is due, many owners move to two-ply SBS, which offers similar multi-layer redundancy with lighter materials and no hot asphalt kettle on site.
