Is TPO Right for Your Calgary Building?
TPO is the most common single-ply membrane we install on Calgary warehouses, retail plazas, schools and low-rise offices. It suits large, simple roof areas where heat-welded seams and a light-coloured surface pay off, and it recovers well over an existing roof when core cuts confirm the insulation is dry.
Calgary's climate shapes how we detail it:
- Chinook freeze-thaw cycles: rapid temperature swings stress seams and flashings, so every hot-air weld is probed and edge metal is fastened to resist uplift.
- Hail: a 60 or 80 mil membrane over an HD cover board resists bruising and punctures far better than 45 mil over soft insulation.
- Snow and drainage: tapered insulation keeps meltwater moving to drains instead of ponding and refreezing at low spots.
- Winter installs: TPO welds in cold weather, but adhesives have temperature limits, so fully adhered systems are scheduled for warmer windows.
